Using a Timeline to Plot the Development of a Problematic Behaviour

When I am working on a behaviour case, I usually use a timeline to plot the development of the problem. This is done by taking all the necessary details from the caregiver and plotting relevant events that preceded the problem and how it developed over time. This gives me much more insight and can help identify triggers which may need to be managed as part of the treatment plan.

This template can be useful to plot how a cat’s behaviour has developed or you can just use this as a guide to draw your own if you need more room.

The template features an example completed timeline, showing how stress-related urine spraying developed in a case featured in my book: A Professional’s Guide to Feline Behaviour: Understanding, Improving and Resolving Problems.
