Dog Enrichment: Creating an Agility Course
In this video I share some ideas for creating a canine sensory agility course. Always make sure to use containers made of safe materials and do not use any food that may be poisonous to dogs.
Canine enrichment ideas are almost endless and it doesn’t have to be expensive.
Dogs were designed to work at getting their food, using many of their senses. This normal activity took up quite a lot of their time budget and energy. Consequently, they had less time to display inappropriate behaviours and kept physically fit.
With domesticity, this activity has been eroded. For most dogs, meal times are over in a matter of seconds. This can lead to boredom and a reservoir of energy that needs to be expended.
For young, high-energy breeds, interactive feeding provides an outlet for their mental and physical energy. Whereas for older dogs, it can be a way of keeping the joints moving and the brain active, preventing cognitive decline. It’s extremely beneficial for anxious dogs too as it redirects all their nervous energy in to a mentally enriching task whilst, at the same time floods the system with feel-good hormones.
